Liberal Democrat Paul Heilbron has retained the hotly contested and much coveted Quays Ward seat on Salford City Council which was left vacant following the resignation of fellow Liberal Democrat councillor Alex Warren, who stood down from his position to pursue a career with Watford Council late last year. As a result of his departure a by-election was triggered after Salford City Council received two requests from the electorate. Just Three Candidates representing Labour, Liberal Democrats and the Green Party stepped forward to take part in the by-election with the notable absence of a Conservative candidate. Canvassers from all concerned parties were active in the ward today (Thursday 11th Jan) as they sought to drum up support for their respective candidates. The results of the election were declared by returning officer Tom Stannard and are as follows: Paul Heilbron - Liberal Democrats: 540 Elizabeth McCoy - Labour Party: 321 Andrea Jospehine Romero O'Brien - Green Party: 124 Voter Turnout: 12.3% Votes Cast: 985 Spoiled Ballots: 8 The political makeup of the council remains the same: Labour 49 Conservative 8 Liberal Democrat 1 Independent 2
