Despite the cold and wet conditions over 300 people attended the annual Remembrance Sunday at Eccles Cenotaph, many of them ex veterans proudly wearing their campaign medals and people of all ages including many young children and toddlers. The Goodshaw Band led the marchers into the cordoned off area around the Cenotaph whilst prayers were read by Rev Lewis Churches Together in Eccles. The Exhortation, We Shall Remember Them was read out by a military veteran followed by The Last Post and this was followed by a two minute silence as the standard bearers lowered their flags and was dutifully observed by the onlookers. Next came the laying of the wreaths always a poignant moment led by The Kings Representative, Salford Council, Merchant Navy, British Legion, Salford veterans Breakfast Club, Greater Manchester Police, Eccles Fire Services, Churches Together in Eccles, North West Ambulance Services, Eccles Scouts, Eccles Rugby Club, Eccles Labour Party and many more. I always find it poignant as the local people laid individual wreaths, single poppies and crosses for loved one's who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Once again it was pleasing to see a local motorcycle group. Red Devils M.C. turn up with Union flags flying and add an extra bit of colour to the day's event as they roared off after the ceremony. Thanks to Graham Walker who made sure the event run with military precision once again, and Tony Martin for supplying the P.A, equipment for the day, well done boys. On a final note I would like to thank the good people of Eccles who once again turned up in force, defied the elements and showed their respect for those who had fallen, take a bow!
