Some 20 families from Afghanistan and Ukraine are to be housed in Salford under a resettlement scheme funded by the Government. The city council has been asked to provide affordable accommodation for the refugees following an agreement with the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. Funding has come from the Local Authority Housing Fund which has allocated a total of £750million across local authorities in England for the accommodation of Afghan and Ukrainian households, arriving in the UK via resettlement and relocation schemes. Salford has been allocated an undisclosed chunk of the cash and given a target to deliver 20 homes. Housing association ForHousing and the city council’s own company Derive Group have agreed to supply the accommodation, according to a report presented to the city council’s cabinet today (Tuesday November 28),which was agreed behind closed doors. Following the meeting, deputy city mayor Councillor John Merry said: “Salford city council had been asked by the Government to provide 20 units of accommodation for Afghan and Ukrainian households who have arrived in the UK via resettlement and relocation schemes. “ForHousing has committed to buying 15 units for this purpose and Derive will use the Government grant funding to build five units. “These 20 units of additional accommodation were not taken from the affordable housing pipeline earmarked for the general housing waiting list. After the Government schemes end, the housing will be added to ForHousing and Derive’s housing supply.”
